Nutritional health is an important factor for remaining independent as we age. Meals on Wheels provides in-home delivery of hot meals five days a week. Our Café Programs address the need for socialization and nutritional education. With support for good nutrition and healthy living, many older adults in our area are able to live safely and independently in their own homes.

We do request that you make a reservation for each event so we know how much food to prepare. Please call Patty Strahan at (815) 941-1590 to make your reservation.

We ask that all participants over age 60 make a voluntary contribution. No one is turned away if you are unable to contribute. If you are under age 60, you may attend as a guest and are asked to pay the full cost of the meal.

If this is your first time attending our café then we will ask that you fill out a one time application form. You can click Here to download and print the form ahead of time before you arrive at the café. The one page application is required as part of our programs but rest assured, our staff at the café will be there to assist you in completing it if you need help or have questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our main office at (312) 207-5290.

Grundy County News August 2019

We would like to thank all of you who took the time to take our survey. While we realize that it’s not something you really like to do, it provides very valuable information on ways we can improve our program. We are looking to offer a little more variety!

Volunteers we need you! We are looking for meal delivery drivers for our home-delivered meal program. In some cases, you are the only person our participant sees that day. Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Being a driver for our program could be the perfect fit!

We are in need of a few volunteer drivers to assist us with the home-delivered meal program, Gardner and Morris's route's especially but occasionally we need someone to drop the food to the driver in Minooka and Coal City.

Most routes take about one hour to an hour and a half and could be one day a week, one day a month, or even one day a year whatever works for you. Routes can be smaller if we get more drivers so please consider helping us. Please call Marge, Nancy or Patty at 815-941-1590 if you are interested.

Whistle Stop Café and R Place both provide a pre-determined senior meal twice a month for $6. The popular Breakfast buffet at R Place on the first Tuesday of the month. We also offer Great Plates meal coupons that are good for either R Place or Whistle Stop, and those are $6 each. They are usable at any time when you make your meal selection from their “Great Plates” menu. You use that coupon to pay for your meal.

Our community café program offers many opportunities for you to join us and have a hot nutritious meal for a great price! These opportunities include a monthly party at Saratoga Tower on Friday, August 30th at 11 AM for our Last Fling of Summer party. Our menu includes: Bratwurst on a bun, Loaded Tator Tots, Corn Salad (elotes), Salad on a stick, Baked Beans, Fruit, Dessert, and Milk for a suggested donation of $4. Wear your favorite “State Fair” attire and join us.

It will be a County Fair theme with some carnival games and fair food surprises so you won’t want to miss it. Lunch is at 11:30 and will be followed by Bingo but come early for the festivities!  You don’t have to live at the Towers to participate so come on in!

Our community café menu has the dates, times and places showing where we will be during the month. We travel to Coal City, Mazon and Minooka, and even R Place in Morris! These meals are catered and cost $6. We also serve a congregate lunch at Saratoga Tower in Morris Monday through Friday at 11:30 AM. On Wednesday and Friday it is followed by Bingo (provided we have our minimum of 5 participants.) The cost of these meals depends on the day but is a suggested donation of $3.50 to $6 per person. We do ask that you RSVP to 815-941-1590 by 9 AM on Monday of that week so we are able to make sure we have enough food for everyone.

To our financial sponsors THANK YOU! Without your support, our program participants would not have these nutrition options available to them. Thank You!

As always, thank you all who volunteer and participate with our programs. If you are one of our volunteers remember to “Save the Date” Tuesday, October 8th for our Volunteer Luncheon! More details to follow!
